There is a good balance of sound throughout the entire film. The music is just as important as the dialogue in this movie. We would have to guess what Sam is thinking as he looks off into the distance on his dock. It would be harder to know what the characters are feeling. If we removed the music from the movie, it would not be the same. With the use of so many love songs, sad and joyous, it lets me know this is a romance film. We can infer from the music they are looking for love with words like “somebody love me tonight” from “Bye, Bye, Blackbird.” In the last scene of the film, the music set the mood of happiness with the playing of “Make Someone Happy.” This song is symbolic of the love Annie and Sam just found. The music is significant because it lets us know what they are thinking. There is music playing in the background. She is walking towards a bench to sit and he is walking towards a seat on his dock. There is a scene where they are several direct cuts from Sam to Annie to Sam and back again. Back in the Saddle playing is reflective of his emotions of being back in the dating game. It helped the audience get pumped up with the character. I would like to call this the ‘get hype’ song. There is a scene where Sam decides to call a girl and ask her out.ĭuring this process, a western song, “Back in the Saddle,” plays. For the most part, love songs play in the background of this movie. The music being played throughout the movie is reflective of Sam’s mood usually. The movie, in fact, begins with a piano playing a slow, soft, sad melody during Sam’s wife’s funeral. It is used, mostly, to show Sam Baldwin’s lonely, sad, sleepless nights. There is a scene with fireworks in which the popping noise was made artificially. It was very befitting since she was technically investigating Sam. These effects played sounds like that of a detective or spy. In the scene where Annie is searching through her computer’s database for Sam Baldwin there is special use of sound effects. A lot of the sound in the film is realistic, such as closing a car door or dropping a glass, though I would like to point out two scenes with special effects. Sleepless in Seattle uses sound throughout the movie. Altogether, dialogue, sound effects, and music has huge impact on a film. Sometimes music is used to portray the emotions of the characters, sometimes it brings out the emotions in the viewer. Music is used to help interpret the film. Something as simple as a door creaking or the wind whistling in a film would be an example of side effects. Typically added to a film after its production, side effects are used to heighten the action. Sound effects were also added to movies during this time. From that point forward dialogue was being used so much that it was nearly obsolete by 1929 (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014).
